By faith alone
What exactly is faith? The dictionary definition is: to have complete confidence in someone or something.
The Bible definition is; ‘Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.’ (Hebrews 11:1)
When we have faith in the redemptive work of Christ and His sacrifice on the cross, we are justified, that is declared or made righteous, in God’s eyes.
‘Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.’ (Romans 5:1)
God is the proper object of faith and anything we do – whether it be baptism, church membership, good works, sincerity – has no value in and of itself.
‘And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.’ (Hebrews 11:6)
So God provides the grace for us to come to Him and we do so by means of faith. However, faith isn’t just a factor of our initial conversion; it’s also to be a feature of our lives in Christ. ‘For we live by faith, not by sight.’ (2 Corinthians 5:7)
Faith is like a muscle; it needs to be exercised. I read a quote recently that underlines this idea; ‘Faith isn’t a feeling. It’s a choice to trust God even when the road ahead seems uncertain.’
‘I pray that out of His glorious riches He [God] may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.’ (Ephesians 3:16)
• Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone)
The only foundation: Scripture is the only infallible and sufficient rule for governing issues of life and doctrine.
• Sola Gratia (Grace Alone)
The only method: Our salvation is solely by the sovereign grace of God and not dependent on any action or condition man provides.
• Solus Christus (Christ Alone)
The only mediator: Jesus Christ is the sole mediator between God and man; salvation is possible only by His death and resurrection.
• Soli Deo Gloria (Glory to God Alone)
The only ambition: All glory and honour are due to God alone.
